Traditional metal braces have been around for years, but they’re not your only choice for straightening your teeth. Dental aligners may also serve to meet your orthodontic needs. A dental evaluation by Dr. Thomas Bill from Los Gatos Creek Dental can determine if orthodontic aligners are a good fit for you. We’re located in Los Gatos but serve residents in Monte Sereno, California, as well. If you’re curious about dental aligners, these FAQs are for you.
Like braces, dental aligners apply gentle pressure to your teeth to slowly shift them into a straighter position. Dr. Thomas uses 3D imaging to plan your procedure and calculate the movements of your teeth to achieve the results you desire. We’ll customize a series of aligners for your use. You’ll wear your aligners for about two weeks before moving on to the next set in your series. Most people will go through all their aligners to achieve their smile goals.
The aligners are worn pretty much full-time, 20 to 22 hours a day. This includes when you sleep. You will mainly take out the aligners when eating, as well as for brushing and flossing your teeth. They should then be put back onto your teeth as soon as possible. Keeping them out too long or removing them too often can cause delays in your treatment.
Dental aligners are very effective in correcting mild to moderate orthodontic issues. This includes crooked and uneven teeth, overlapping teeth, uneven spacing, crowding, and most overbite, underbite, and crossbite issues. If your problem is too severe for aligners, traditional metal braces may be needed.
Aligners offer a number of conveniences over metal braces. First, they’re removable, allowing you to eat and brush, and floss normally. You won’t have to alter your diet or oral hygiene routine. They’re also more comfortable to wear and easier to use, as there are no metal parts poking into your gums or cheeks. As the aligners are clear, they’re more discreet than metal braces, making you feel less self-conscious about your appearance.
That’s hard to say, as people differ in their orthodontic needs. The time frame for completing your procedure depends a loton the problems you want to correct and the severity of these issues. On average, however, dental aligner treatments take 12 to 18 months to complete.
Aligner care isn’t difficult. To remove plaque and debris, brush the aligners daily with a soft bristle brush and clear, liquid soap. Rinse in warm water every time they’re removed. Always store your aligners safely in a clean container when not in use.
