Tooth damage isn’t always preventable, and broken teeth don’t always have to be removed. When accidents happen, there’s a good chance your tooth can be repaired with a dental crown. Dr. Thomas Bill from Los Gatos Creek Dental offers new crowns for teeth to our Los Gatos, CA, patients. A crown can provide a lasting solution to restoring your beautiful smile.
Are crowns a good investment? The following FAQs can help you decide:
Crowns are a highly versatile restorative treatment that can be used to repair, protect, and restore your smile! Crowns protect worn and fragile teeth to keep them from breaking. They repair fractured and broken teeth so they can continue to be used. They support teeth with large fillings so you can bite and chew comfortably without worrying about your tooth cracking. They even replace a missing tooth with a single implant! When placed on existing teeth, crowns cover your whole tooth structure to make your tooth look and function like new!
Crown treatment generally takes two dental visits. On your first visit, Dr. Thomas will inspect your tooth to see if a crown is warranted. If so, we’ll reshape its structure to make room for a crown. Then we’ll create a mold of your tooth and send it to a special lab to have a custom-made crown just for you. The fabrication process can take several weeks, so we’ll top your tooth with a temporary crown in the meantime. When your permanent crown is ready, we’ll schedule a second visit to have it fitted. We’ll ensure your crown fits comfortably, looks natural, and that you can bite properly before cementing it in place permanently.
You can choose between a variety of materials for your crown, including porcelain, ceramic, metal (gold, nickel, chromium), and porcelain-fused-to-metal. For a natural tooth-colored appearance, ceramic and porcelain crowns are the best. For strength and durability, you can’t beat metal crowns. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns give you the best of both worlds.
Ceramic and porcelain crowns are extremely durable and can easily last 10+ years with good oral care. Metal crowns can last indefinitely. Dr. Thomas offers the following advice to keep your crown strong and healthy long-term:
Dental crowns help repair and restore teeth that may otherwise have to be removed. They extend the lifespan of your teeth and preserve your natural smile. Crowns also save you the cost of extraction and replacing your tooth in the future. So yes! They’re worth it!
